What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an effective and efficient technique for the treatment of muscular pain and myofascial dysfunction. It involves the use of needles inserted into trigger points (areas of muscle in a tight band which cause pain when pressed or squeezed) to provoke a response from the brain and the spinal cord to produce natural pain relieving chemicals and to increase blood flow to that area. The increase in blood brings in necessary nutrients and also flushes the area of waste products, causing a release in muscle tension.
WHat happens during an acupuncture session?
I generally provide acupuncture alongside a massage treatment; meaning I will warm up the area and identify problem areas through massage, then insert the needles and continue to work other areas of the body, whilst the needles work their magic!
Needles are inserted into specific areas of muscle tissue following trauma, with unresolved pain or in a shortened state in order to facilitate relaxation and increase muscle length. The needle is inserted until the muscle relaxes.
While some people worry about acupuncture through a 'fear of needles' that stems from experience of traditional medical injections, acupuncture is completely different, and almost painless. I always do my utmost to put you at ease and if you have any questions I will happily answer these before we start the treatment.
I am qualified to use acupuncture techniques in the treatment of injuries and soft tissue problems, but do not practice other aspects of acupuncture, such as those associated with Traditional Chinese Medicine.
